could soon be out of prison. a california parole board has approved a request from bruce davis. he's serving a life sentence for the 1969 murders of music teacher gary hindman and stuntman shorty shay. >> the parole board says it has 120 days to review this recommendation and then it's up to the california governor, jerry brown, to decide if it stands. davis was granted parole in 2010 but that decision was overturned by then governor arnold schwarzenegger. if he goes free, davis would be the second convicted manson family killer to be freed on parole. steve grogan who was also convicted in the murder of the stuntman shorty shay, was released on parole in the mid-1980s. the prosecutor who sent the manson family to prison says davis should stay behind bars. manson himself was denied parole for the 12th time. he will not be eligible for parole for 15 years. by then, he will be 92 years old. arnold schwarzenegger said it was because of the heinous crimes. this was something that gripped the country and still is a part of kind of our psyche today. the parole board, though, saying he has t

stretch of a final 12-mile journey carefully making its way to its retirement home at a california science center. casey wian on the streets right now and john zarrella is there, as well, with gaggle of onlookers on the rooftop. john, where is this shuttle now? >> reporter: it's getting here slowly. don, people have been asking me all along the route. and you can see here, there are thousands of people who have gathered here. this is a shopping mall and right outside the shopping mall is an area where the shuttle was going to make a second stop for a ceremony. the first one was earlier this morning. but it hasn't gotten here yet. it is already two hours behind schedule and the problem was they ran into some -- i'm going to bring in stephanie from nassau. and stephanie, ran into some issues here. you knew those things were out there. but, you know, a little more problematic than probably first thought. >> yes, they knew they were going to have to crab between the trees, very precise movement along the way. also crowd control, police force is having to back people up. that slowed thi

route from los angeles international airport to the california science center. now, what we can show you is, okay, we have the wing that's really close to that tree. if we look over on the other side of the street, you can now see the platform starting to move. but you can see it's almost out of room on the other side of the street. so it's a very, very delicate maneuver. this platform that it's on, each of the wheels can move individually. it can go side to side and backwards and forwards so they're trying to reposition it right now to get around that tree and try to save it. we have asked a couple of the workers here who are managing this whole process whether they're going to cut the tree down or not. they say they don't know. they have tried throughout the process to save as many trees as possible. 400 have been cut down along the route. they'll be replaced 2 for 1, but some of the residents of the communities have been upset because they don't want to lose any trees. we're still watching the process and we're going to see whether it gets by the tree. you can watch as the shuttle

. then coming here the president has come to california as kind of his atm. he does a lot of fund-raisers here from the hollywood set and others and has been able to pull in a lot of cash. that's primary focus of the president's trip. as you pointed out he's having the big concert with big names, earth, wind and fire, katy perry and george clooney is expected to deliver remarks as well. in addition to that, the president will also be meeting with what the campaign is calling some high-dollar donors. these are people who have been consistently raising big amounts of money for the president. about a dozen of them, the president will be meeting privately with them. then later tonight we'll also be having a fund-raising dinner with, again, high rollers, high donors, if you will. people who are putting up $40,000 each for the dinner. so the president expected to pull in about $9.5 million, not only in fund-raisers here in los angeles but also tomorrow up in northern california. >> $40,000 dinner, dinner is expensive out in hollywood. >> reporter: that's right. >> fund-raising, the pres

really is inching along at a rapid rate of 2 miles an hour and it's on its way to the california science center. by the way, when it flew it used to fly at 17,000 miles an hour, so this is pretty awesome, but to me, this is awesome. we've seen it riding with a rocket booster on the back of a 747, it will be pulled by an teeny, weinie toyota tundra. the idea of the difference between them. adorable. the whole thing weighs over 292,000 pounds. the endeavour alone weighs 150,000 pounds and that's a lot of carrying devices, et cetera. we looked this up, a toyota tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pound, but when it pulls this spacecraft it's 282,000 pounds over its capacity. our john zarrella who gets everything science joins us from l.a. because you've had this fabulous assignment the whole journey. tell me where we are in the journey and how we're doing today. >> reporter: okay, where we are, ashleigh is we're parked and it's a tremendous opportunity for the people of los angeles and they're coming out with their kids and their families and getting to take pictures with the orb

trips it's ever made, a total of 12 miles from l.a.x. where it left yesterday to the california science center, which will be its new and final home. they are about halfway home now. we can see from some of the live pictures we have out there now. they're about four blocks from where we are just off of manchester, and this is one of the areas where they expect that about 5,000 people will be gathering here as the shuttle goes by. this is the old forum arena here where the los angeles lakers used to play, and they've cordoned this whole area off as a viewing area for endeavor as it goes by. one of the tricky spots was last night as it crossed over the 405 expressway about midnight local time here, and it was actually towed by a pickup truck across the 405 because they were concerned about weight. and they had to lessen the weight. so they had to move it to a different transport system. but it has been a phenomenal couple of days here, and it's funny, we talk about the space program and people always talk about well, they're blase about it and it doesn't have the juice, so to spea

shooting that took place in engelwood, california. five people were shot and a fire and a manhunt under way. art, what do we know? >> reporter: this is a really tragic situation unfolding out here in engelwood, california. around 4:00 this morning l.a. county fire received a call that shots were fired. so they responded. upon their arrival, they found two people shot in the street, one in an alleyway and two others in a house and also a house in the back of the front house is a back house where it's rented out by some tenant there. what they have are a bunch of children, they have three children and two adults all shot. the father, the 30-year-old father died of his injuries at ucla medical center a couple hours ago. and tragically, sadly, a 4-year-old boy who was shot in the head died of his injuries as well. >> i have to interrupt you. i just going to stop you. we're going to run out of time. manhunt under way. still looking for the suspect, right? >> they're looking for the suspect right now. >> we'll continue to stay in touch for updates. thank you. >>> coming up this afternoon on cnn n

things happening all at once. for one, carol, the supply crunch in california that's been happening there is kind of easing off a bit. there was a power outage at one refinery there. a fire at another refinery. what that did is it caused prices in california to spike earlier this month. also there's a decline in crude oil prices themselves. oil makes up a majority of our gasoline prices. those have actually been coming down since the beginning of september. then we've got the typical seasonal slowdown that you all can see after the peak summer driving season. what's happening is there's less demand, which means we don't see stations raising their prices. plus what these refineries do is they switch to a cheaper fuel this time of year, what's known as winter grade. they no longer year the cleaner, more expensive summer blend from a couple of months ago. roll all that together. that brings down gas prices ever so slightly. noticeable. you drive by the gas station, you see the drop. you say, wow, finally, carol. >> and with no help from either presidential candidate those gas prices ca
